Order Picker (Low, Medium and High Level) training in Nottingham

Trucks that lift the operator to the stock. Low-level pickers run at floor height; high-level pickers take the operator to the top shelf.

About order pickers

Order picking is the job of taking individual cases or items off pallets in racking to build up a customer order, and order picker trucks are built to make that fast. Low-level pickers are essentially a pallet truck with an operator platform and sometimes a small lift, used to run along pick faces at ground level. Medium- and high-level pickers raise the operator in a caged platform with the forks, so they can pick from the second, third or top beam by hand.

The growth of fulfilment warehouses in Nottinghamshire has put thousands of these trucks to work, and because the operator leaves the ground on a high-level truck, the risks are different from a forklift. Falls from the platform, crushing between the cage and the racking, and loads shifting on the forks while the truck travels at height are what the course is built around.

Low-level pickers are quick to train; high-level pickers take longer and include harness use, platform gates, emergency lowering and working at height. If you run more than one level we certificate each, and we can often cover both in the same visit.

What the course covers

  • Pre-use checks including platform gates, harness points and controls
  • Low-level: pedestrian awareness, platform riding and pick-face discipline
  • High-level: harness use, emergency lowering and working at height
  • Travelling with a raised platform where the truck allows it
  • Stacking and picking technique and load security on the forks
  • Battery handling, parking and shutdown

Order Picker (Low, Medium and High Level) training questions

Are low-level and high-level order pickers separate certificates?

Yes. Low-level trucks keep the operator near the floor; high-level trucks lift them to height, which brings in harness and fall protection. We certificate each level separately.

Do operators need a reach-truck certificate first?

No. Order picker training stands on its own. Operators who also move whole pallets with a reach truck need that certificate separately.
